In the heart of the southern Appalachians, three women were cast under the tender spell of a small wooden doll.
One of the women, Jennifer Carrier, was a woodcarver, and she endeavored to make a peg doll as true and perfect as the original Hitty of the early 1800s.
Another of the women, Patti Wentland, a fiber artist for much of her life, was, at once, intrigued and inspired to become the seamstress for Hitty's various dresses, pinafores and pantalets. She created the most beautiful clothes imaginable.
Yet another of the women, Holly Carlisle, was a woodworker. Never having tried miniatures before, she set out to perfect furniture-making for a tiny Hitty world, always remaining true to the original designs of the day.
Together, they carved and hammered, basted and pinned, sanded and finished, all the while thinking of Hitty, the adventures of her past and the adventures yet to come.
